When I tried to change the mesh of the BotPawn in the ShooterGame example, I could do no damage. The problem is that the meshes I used (https://www.unrealengine.com/marketplace/infinity-blade-enemies) do not have a "Physics Asset". Which is essentially a map of how the object responds to physics, see https://docs.unrealengine.com/latest/INT/Engine/Physics/PhAT/ for more information.
UE4 makes this easier by automatically generating them (but they aren't perfect). Right-click the skeletal mesh in the content browser: Create -> Physics Asset
Now it will work
